Perhaps you have heard: You steal from God if you don’t give the tithe, or you are under a curse if you don’t give, or God will punish you if you don’t give the tithe, or God will not heal you if you do not give. These two things are usually not said directly, but it can often be perceived in this way and maybe someone thinks this way too?
In fact, I’ve heard someone say it like this: If you are stingy (“and do not give to us”) then you will go to hell, for those who are stingy will not inherit the kingdom of God.
I get very upset when I hear statements and teachings that are manipulative and that give you guilt, condemnation or fear like this!
None of these things are compatible with God’s character, and some can easily take scriptures out of context and misuse them.
In this teaching today I hope I can give you some clarity and also free you from condemnation and guilt especially in connection with the tithe and money.
Scriptures I have used in this teaching
Malachi 3:8-10
8 Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me. But you say, In what have we robbed You? In the tithe and the offering!
9 You are cursed with a curse; for you are robbing Me, the nation, all of it.
10 Bring all the tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. And test Me now with this, says the LORD of hosts, to see if I will not open the windows of Heaven for you, and pour out a blessing for you, until there is not enough room.
Galatians 3:10-13
10 For as many as are out of works of the Law, these are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the Book of the Law, to do them.”
11 But that no one is justified by the Law in the sight of God is clear, for, “The just shall live by faith.”
12 But the Law is not of faith; but, “The man who does these things shall live in them.”
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, being made a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone having been hanged on a tree”);
Melchizedek Gen:14:18 and Heb 7:1-10.
2 Corinthians 9:6-8
6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
1 Corinthians 13:3
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
