Many Christians often pray this prayer: God use me!  I myself have prayed this prayer, especially when I were in my teens.

One of the reasons was that I were afraid that I could not be used for anything, and I attached my identity to what I could do and to be used for.

I have one year and 3 months old daughter (when I write this) and I love her over all on this earth.
But my thoughts are not this: What can I use my daughter for, or what can she do for me?
Had I been thinking so, I would have been a selfish, self-seeking and evil father.

Other Christians may also have heard this taught in Churches: God will use you, and it can often have been said in connection with: If you live holy, if you are a hundred percent surrendered and obedient to God or if you love God with all your heart (and enough).

Some also have very negative associations with this word.  It may have been used in a manipulative way, or they can even have been abused.
For them, this word is associated with great fear.

Can I tell you one thing? The Bible does not talk about using you, and God does not want to use you either.  Some people may react when I say this, but let me explain!
One of the reasons is that you don’t get your value from how much God uses you or what you have done for him.
Many people build their identity and how much God is satisfied with them, how successful they are in what God has used them to or what they have done for him.

To do, is perhaps better word to use, but it can still be misused or misunderstood if our focus is on doing.

I have good news for you: God does not want to use you, and his focus is not on what to do for him.
His focus is on what he has done for you and that you are his beloved child.
 1 John 3: 1
See how much love the Father has shown us, that we should be called the children of God, and we are.

God wants you to see that He has loved you first!
 1 John 4:19
19 We love Him because He loved us first.

If you don’t do a thing for God until you get to heaven, he still loves you!  And you will not lose your salvation if you don’t do anything for him, God won’t even hold it up against you!

I have a nine months old daughter (when I write this) and I love her over all on this earth.
But my thoughts are not this: What can I use my daughter for, or what can she do for me?
Had I been thinking so, I would have been a selfish, self-seeking and evil father.

  • But unfortunately there are many people who think that God is this way.

Some may think: What scriptures do you have on this? I have already given you two, but first: if you put this in perspective with God being a good father who loves us without conditions, you will find many scriptures that tell us God as our good father.

Here are some examples:
In 1John 4: 8 and 16 says that God is love.
And you find out what love is both in 1 Cor 13 and the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5, which God must of course have.

In 1 Corinthians 13:5 says this it in black and white: Love does not seek its own. In other words: God is not an egoist trying to use you to his advantage.

If you see things from the perspective of love and a love relationship with God, then a lot will change!

Let me just conclude with this: Seeing that God loves us will not make us passive and inactive, on the contrary, it will cause us to do more because we do it with the right motive.
We do not need to pay back anything to Jesus because what he has done for us, or because we will try to please God somehow, but we do it because we are unable to keep this grate love for ourselves.

When Peter and John were arrested for telling the Good News and threatening them, they said:
Acts 4:20
20 As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.

They didn’t do things from a motive of: I most do it, but they couldn’t keep it to themselves, even though it meant losing their lives. It was love that drove them, not condemnation, not a guilty conscience or fear of losing their salvation.

They did it because of Love!
